The EOS quality advantage

With all key components developed and manufactured in-house, EOS offers photographers a unique quality advantage. The EOS 450D’s specially designed 12.2 Megapixel sensor employs Canon’s high-sensitivity, low-noise CMOS technology to produce richly detailed images with minimal grain. The DIGIC III processor ensures superior image rendering and rapid response times, with an almost instant 0.1 start up. Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption.

Built for better photos

The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience. Housed in a compact body that weighs less than 475 grams, the camera features an improved grip design that provides a natural, ergonomic fit with the user’s hands. A large, bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable. The menu system inherited from professional EOS cameras uses a simplified tab structure that does away with scrolling. It includes a user-defined My Menu tab for instant access to frequently used settings.

Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds.

Live View

Available for the first time on a Canon consumer D-SLR, Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed on the 3.0” LCD, which is 50% brighter than the screen of the EOS 400D. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus - a method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.

For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.

Other improvements

The EOS 450D complements its headline features with a host of smaller improvements that enhance the photographic experience. The viewfinder now displays all key exposure information including ISO speed. The addition of spot metering (4% of viewfinder) allows for greater control over exposure in tricky lighting conditions. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. A new high capacity battery extends shooting time on a single charge to a maximum of 500 shots.

Software

The EOS 450D is supplied with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the photograph needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data and Picture Styles. The supplied Picture Style Editor software can be used to create custom Picture Styles for fine control over colour display. The camera also comes with EOS Utility, Image/Zoom Browser and Photostitch.

View life from a different angle
The D5000’s 2.7-inch vari-angle LCD monitor offers a whole new perspective on photography, allowing you to take pictures easily from any angle. Its flexible, moving screen allows you to position the camera perfectly to suit the angle or shot you’re trying to take - so whether you’re at a concert and you want to get a clear view above the crowd for your shot or you want to take a picture from ground level, you can adjust the vari-angle monitor to give you the best view of your subject. Close it to protect the monitor or place it in the standard position for regular shooting using the viewfinder. You can even reverse the monitor for effortless, perfectly-framed self-portraits. Thanks to Nikon’s ergonomic design values and the downward opening direction of the screen, it will never get in your way, and you’ll be able to maintain a steady grip on the body which will prevent camera shake. The choice is limitless.

D-Movie and Live View
Shooting movie clips with a DSLR will allow you to get really creative. For example, you can change the lens for a new perspective and enhance the emotional impact of your movies using the Picture Control settings before you even start shooting. The D5000 offers D-Movie (with audio) - high-definition movie capture perfectly compatible with the latest television screens and an HDMI output for easy connection. The single button access to the Live View function allows you to view and compose your shot or movie on the vari-angle LCD monitor for optimal framing. When taking still shots, the camera offers four types of contrast AF (wide area, normal area, face detection and new subject tracking) to make capture as easy as possible. In subject tracking AF mode, the camera will even restart tracking the subject once it leaves the frame and then returns, so your target will always be in focus.

Setting the Scene
With a total of 19 scene modes, you don’t have to know the ins and outs of digital photography to take great pictures. Simply turn the dial to ‘scene’, choose the appropriate scene mode setting and the camera will do the rest for you. The camera will even display a sample scene to make the scene selection easier for you. Another easy-to-use feature is the camera’s extensive range of built-in editing function, with which you can edit your pictures and create visual effects in-camera, before you even get to a computer.

There’s more
In addition to all these features, the D5000 is a high quality camera in its own right. With its high-sensitivity 12.3 effective megapixel CMOS image sensor, Nikon’s innovative EXPEED high-speed image-processing system, fast and precise 11-point AF system and highly-durable, high-performance shutter, it is also perfectly suited to those with a higher level of photographic knowledge. Image quality is guaranteed further by the image sensor cleaning mechanism with airflow control system, Active D-Lighting and Picture control. The different playback options of the D5000 are as enjoyable as they are practical. You can view photos in batches of up to 72, and there is also a calendar view that organises images by date and time. And for serious photo enthusiasts, the D5000 can display a histogram on magnifies areas of the image to facilitate exposure control. It feels good to handle, too, with Nikon’s typically ergonomic design in a compact, light-weight body. Those who shoot pictures in quieter settings will appreciate the new Quiet shooting mode and, the built-in pop-up flash which will automatically detect when the flash is needed. For those on the move, GPS-compatibility with Nikon’s GP-1 unit will come in handy when pinpointing shooting locations as will the HDMI output when you finally want to present your great shots to your family and friends. The Nikon D5000 is compatible with a wide variety of AF-S and AF-I Nikkor lenses.

Nikon D5000 Feature Highlights

New 450° Vari-angle LCD

The innovative 450° Vari-angle monitor swings down approximately 180° and rotates 270°, allowing users to easily shoot from interesting angles in Live View mode. Featuring a bright 2.7-in. 230,000-dot LCD, the new monitor provides a comfortable view from virtually any shooting perspective. The monitor can also be stowed with the LCD panel neatly tucked against the camera back to protect the screen when not in use.

Nikon DX-format 12.3-megapixel CMOS image sensor

At 12.3 effective megapixels, the D5000 produces high-resolution images with outstanding enlargement capability. The high signal-to-noise ratio results in images with extremely low noise even when shooting at high ISO settings. Normal ISO sensitivity is ISO 200 to 3200. For added shooting versatility, a Hi 1 setting increases sensitivity to ISO 6400 while a Lo 1 setting decreases it to ISO 100.

Specially designed EXPEED image processing system

The D5000 is equipped with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image processing system. This leading-edge technology provides the power to process the large amount of data generated by the D5000’s 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor. EXPEED realises excellent resolution, long tonal scale, and superb colour while also making possible fast processing of the D5000’s advanced imaging functions such as Scene Recognition with Face Detection, Live View AF, and Active D-Lighting — all of which demand tremendous processing capability.

Live View shooting

Nikon’s versatile Live View shooting, now enhanced by the D5000’s Vari-angle monitor, can be accessed with one-touch ease by pressing the Live View button. Autofocus with Live View has been further improved by the addition of Subject tracking AF, which automatically locks onto a pre-selected subject and maintains focus on it even if it momentarily leaves the frame. This mode joins three other contrast-detect AF modes with which the D5000 is equipped: Face priority AF (which automatically detects up to five faces in a scene then focuses on the closest face); Wide area AF (which offers a large AF area for optimal handheld shooting) and; Normal area AF (which provides pin-point focusing accuracy for excellent results when using a tripod).

Movie clips with D-Movie

In response to user demand for video shooting capability in digital SLRs, the D5000 includes Nikon’s D-Movie function. First available on the Nikon D90, D-Movie gives users the flexibility to shoot Motion JPEG movie clips in different formats at a smooth 24 frames per second. For high-quality playback on HDTVs, the D5000 produces clips at 1,280 x 720 pixels. Users who want to view on standard computer monitors or upload to photo sharing websites can shoot at 640 x 424 pixels or 320 x 216 pixels, respectively. Because the D5000’s sensor is much larger than that of a typical camcorder, movie clips display superior image quality and low noise even when shot at high ISO settings. Additionally, the D5000’s compatibility with NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses opens up a wide range of possibilities for dramatic expression, from fisheye and wide-angle shots to long telephoto scenes and extreme close-ups.

19 Scene Modes

Scene Modes empower users to obtain great looking shots in a variety of situations with point-and-shoot ease. These modes adjust exposure, white balance, Active D-lighting, and Picture Control settings depending on the selected mode. Six commonly used modes can be selected using the D5000’s mode dial, while the remaining 13 are accessed by setting the mode dial to SCENE then simply turning the command dial to make the selection. To assist in determining the best mode, the D5000 displays a sample photo as each mode is selected. Newly added modes are Pet portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn colours, Food, Silhouette, High key, and Low key.

Scene Recognition System with Face Detection System

In order to accurately adjust exposure and white balance as well as assist autofocus, the D5000 utilises a 420-pixel RGB sensor to analyse colour and illumination over the entire scene milliseconds prior to exposure. This allows the D5000 to better evaluate scene content, resulting in improved exposure for better image quality while also boosting autofocus performance. Additionally, the D5000 detects human faces using its Face Detection System.

Active D-Lighting

The D5000 incorporates Nikon’s Active D-Lighting function to vastly improve details in the shadows and highlights of high-contrast scenes. Like the Scene Recognition System, Active D-Lighting utilises the 420-pixel RGB sensor to analyse a scene then adjust exposure to achieve images that closely resemble what the human eye sees. During processing, this function also restores details in areas of the image that exhibit image loss. There are six Active D-Lighting settings — Auto, Extra high, High, Normal, Low, and Off — along with a bracket mode that allows users to shoot one image with Active D-Lighting and one without.

11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module

Employing 11-point autofocus driven by Nikon’s Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module, the D5000 delivers fast, precise focus over a wide area of the frame when shooting through the optical viewfinder. Four versatile AF modes are available: single-point AF for stationary subjects, especially ones that are off-center; dynamic-area AF for moving subjects; auto-area AF when you want the D5000 to automatically determine the proper focus method and; 3D-tracking (11 points) AF for maintaining focus on subjects even if the composition changes.

Picture Control System

The Picture Control System of the D5000 gives users the ability to customise key image capture characteristics to suit personal preferences. Six settings are available — Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape — along with the ability to create up to nine custom Picture Control settings.

Photo editing

After shooting, the D5000’s newly expanded photo editing functions allow for in-camera retouching, lessening the need for a computer to enhance or modify images. The D5000 introduces several new editing options under its Retouch Menu, including Soft Filter, Perspective Control (which helps correct distortions in perspective), and Colour Outline (which creates monochrome outlines of objects in images by eliminating colour and tonal gradations). Each editing function is applied to a copy of the image, with the original left unmodified.

Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System

Dust reduction is handled by the Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System. This is a comprehensive solution that reduces generation and accumulation of dust and also provides measures to remove dust. A key element of the solution is the Airflow Control System, which directs dust away from the image sensor. The system also includes an image sensor cleaning function that activates automatically when the D5000 is powered on. This vibrates the low-pass filter (located in front of the sensor) to free it from dust.
